ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze the prevalence of allergic diseases in Korean schoolchildren according to their residential areas in 2010. METHODS: A nationwide, cross-sectional study was conducted in children aged 6-7 years (n=4,003) and adolescents aged 12-13 years (n=4,112) who were randomly selected. Demographic and disease-related information was obtained through a Korean version of ISAAC (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood) questionnaire, and skin prick tests for 18 inhalant allergens were performed. RESULTS: There was statistically significant regional difference in the prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) (P<0.05). The regions with highest and lowest prevalence in 12- to 13-year-old children were as follows: Chungcheong and Honam in "Diagnosis of AR, ever" (33.7% vs. 24.5%), Jeju and Yeongnam in "Treatment of AR, last 12 months" (25.5% vs. 18.0%), Chungcheong and Yeongnam in "Rhinitis with sensitization" (31.6% vs. 23.6%). The regions with highest and lowest prevalence in 6-7 years old children were as follows: Yeongnam and Seoul in "Diagnosis of AR, ever" (42.1% vs. 31.0%), Yeongnam and Jeju in "Treatment of AR, last 12 months" (31.8% vs. 21.9%), Jeju and Seoul in "Rhinitis with sensitization" (26.0% vs. 18.4%). We also found a regional difference in inhalant allergens among the children with "rhinitis with sensitization" CONCLUSION: The prevalence of AR in children differs according to residential areas in a nationwide survey in 2010 while there is no significant regional difference in the prevalence of asthma and AD.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: We assessed the dynamic characteristics of 16 nebulizer/compressor combinations currently available in Korea. METHODS: The 16 nebulizer/compressor combinations(Pariboy Type 38/Long life, Pariboy Type N/ Long life, Pariboy Type N/Salter 8900, Pariboy Type N/LC, Devilbiss pulmoaid-LT/Hudson, Devilbiss pulmoaid/Hudson, Mesmed neb-300/Own, San-up 3040/Hudson, Midas(Basic)/Own, AirJolie 2/ Hudson, Thomas 1127/Salter 8900, Noel NE-2000/Salter 8900, Omron CX3/Hudson, Chang Woo CWN-100/Salter 8900, Voyage/Mefar, Chang Woo ASI-Pro/Medel jet pulse) were evaluated in terms of particle size and mass output. In addition, we determined the effects of nebulizer fill volume on mass output. RESULTS: Pariboy Type N/Long life has the highest respirable mass of 0.184 mg/min and Mesmed Neb-300/Own has the lowest 0.019 mg/min. Pariboy Type N/Long life has the highest mass output of 0.68 mg/min and the shortest mass median aerodynamic diameter(MMAD) of 3.76 m. All combinations other than Pariboy Type N/Long life produced a MMAD of over 5 m. MMAD over a 5 min nebulization ranged 3.76 to 9.83 m. There were no significant effects of fill volume on mass output. CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that there is a wide variation in performance of nebulizer/compressor combinations. The characteristics of nebulizer/compressor combinations should be considered in selecting products.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Intermittent bronchial obstruction and increased airway responsiveness to inhaled nonspecific stimuli are main features of asthma. We retrospectively studied a group of children with asthma to investigate the contribution of childhood asthma characteristics and degree of bronchial responsiveness in combination with other variables in the prediction of adult level of pulmonary function & bronchial responsiveness. METHODS: We carried out the retrospective study on 65 adult patients who had been performed methacholine provocation test at Yonsei university children's allergic clinic from March 1994 to July 1997. These cases were diagnosed bronchial asthma on childhood. RESULTS: 1) In this study 65 patients were investigated, 45 subjects(69.3%)(A) were negative on methacholine provocation test, & 20 subjects(30.7%)(B) were positive. 2) Age of onset of asthma, A group was earlier than B group.(1.2 vs. 3.8 year) 3) There was significant relationship between mean PC20-methacholine and % predicted FEV. 4) There was no significant difference between A & B group in the number of allergen & duration included in the immunotherapy. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that age of onset, degree of symptoms, % predicted FEV of childhood asthma are relevant to predict the outcome of the adult pulmonary function level, and the childhood degree of bronchial responsiveness are important for the prediction of adult degree of bronchial responsiveness among children with asthma.
